How it works
- 01 — Add both monthly take-home incomes. The calculator adds them to get your combined household income.
- 02 — Each person's fair share is their income divided by the combined income, applied to the total bills:your share = (your income ÷ combined income) × total shared bills
- 03 — Compare it with the 50/50 column. The percentages show what the bills cost each person relative to their own income — that gap is the fairness difference.
Worked example
Incomes of €4,000 and €6,000 with €2,500 of shared bills. Combined income is €10,000, so the split by income is €1,000 and €1,500 — 25% of each income. Under 50/50 both pay €1,250, which is 31.3% of the lower income but only 20.8% of the higher one.
Questions people ask
- Is splitting bills by income actually fairer?
- It equalises effort rather than euros. Each person contributes the same share of what they earn, so the bills take a similar bite out of both budgets. A 50/50 split looks equal but hits the lower earner harder.
- Which income should I enter — gross or take-home?
- Take-home pay, after tax and deductions. That is the money actually available for bills, so it gives a realistic split.
- What counts as shared bills?
- Anything you both benefit from: rent or mortgage, utilities, internet, groceries, insurance, shared subscriptions and transport. Keep personal spending out of the total.
- What if our incomes change every month?
- Use a three-month average, or recalculate at the start of each month. If income is very irregular, agree on percentages once and apply them to whatever the bill total turns out to be.
- Does the calculator store my numbers?
