“Who pays what?” monthly planner
Most households do not want to split every receipt — they want each person to own a few direct debits and know the month is still fair. Assign your bills, and this planner shows what each person actually pays out, what their fair target is, and the one transfer that closes the gap.

“Who pays what?” monthly planner
Assign every shared bill to one of you, then see whether the month actually lands where you intended — and the single transfer that squares it up.
Bills and who pays them
Add amounts to your bills to see how the month lands.
How it works
- 01 — Every bill is assigned to one person or marked as split down the middle, and we add up what each of you pays out.
- 02 — Your fair target is either half the total or your income-proportional share:target = total bills × (your income ÷ combined income)
- 03 — The difference between what you pay out and your target becomes one monthly transfer in one direction.
Worked example
€2,000 of shared bills, incomes of €2,500 and €1,500. The higher earner's fair target is €1,250. If they hold the rent at €1,400 and their partner covers €600 of everything else, one transfer of €150 from the lower earner settles the month — and nothing else has to move.
Questions people ask
- Is it better to split every bill or divide them up?
- Dividing them up is far less work. Each person owns whole direct debits, nothing gets split at the till, and one small monthly transfer corrects whatever imbalance the assignment leaves.
- How do we decide who takes which bill?
- Start with what is already in each person's name, then move bills across until the two totals sit near each person's fair target. Give the person with the steadier pay date the rent or mortgage.
- Do we need a joint account for this?
- No. This method is designed for two personal accounts and one standing order between them. A joint account is convenient, but it is not required to keep things fair.
- What if a bill changes every month?
- Assign it to one person and let the balancing transfer absorb the variation, or review the transfer amount every few months. Chasing exact splits on a moving bill costs more attention than it saves.
- Should the transfer be a standing order?
- Yes — set it for the day after both salaries land. Automating it is what stops the monthly conversation about who owes whom.
